Halloween Scene

In some ways I hate this time of year. Maybe I just have a weak stomach, but the decorations seem to be getting gorier and gorier, and it almost makes me ill sometimes. Am I the only one who finds fake blood (that new window gel stuff) on the window of a pizza joint a little stomach turning when you go in to get your pizza or meatball sub? Also why I'm not going with the husband and kids to Halloweekends.

I completely agree with you, Barb. I just don't get Halloween decorations. I'm not talking about the harvest variety--pumpkins and scarecrows and such--but the huge spiders on the sides of houses and tombstones in the yard and spiderwebs and the gore, etc. you mention. It's just yucky to look at, and it escapes me why anyone would be motivated to spend good time and money on it.

lol.
laughing because of all of the days in october, the last day is the *one day* that i didn't want my baby born on.
yet i had complete assurance in my heart that he'd be born in october.
so we light candles and celebrate Mouse's birthday on the day when everyone else is doing dark and spooky things.
i really like it X

I've caved, thanks to the reassurance of Lutheran Lucciola, on letting Sparkle dress up and trick or treat.

But mercy, I cannot stand the filth and dreck that the neighbors put up.

This year, they "boarded" up their windows with strips of vinyl siding spray painted black, and they've only gotten started on the decorating.

EC, don't feel bad--I've caved this year, too. Evan will be trick-or-treating for the first time ever, largely because his big sis is dying to take him (she's dressing up, too, as Elphaba from Wicked). My objection to celebrating Halloween was never so much about the occultish elements but more about what I have always resented as a sort of invasion of privacy in the idea that perfect strangers--and often big, rude, scary-looking teenage ones--feel justified in coming to my house and asking me for candy. Who do they think they are? And do they think I'm made of money? Candy is expensive!

But here I go this year letting my ownd kids beg the neighbors for handouts. What an unprincipled sell-out I am.

I'm with you. One of my favorite days of the year is Nov. 1, for two reasons: 1) Halloween, one of my least favorite days, is over, and 2) the Halloween candy goes half-price or better ;)
