I Don't Get It

So, many movies, as well as big-name actors, are tanking at the box office. Is the answer really to produce Indiana Jones and the Golden Viagra? Seriously?

I think that the new Indiana Jones movie will be reasonably successful. First because, it has what the movies mentioned in that article don't: a very charismatic star that most people like. It is also a known commodity that can arguably be thought not to have worn out its welcome.

It would take an incredibly strong story and cast to make me go see anything with Sean Penn in it. :)

I've come to feel the same way about Harrison Ford as just about any Hollywood movie actor. Meh. Plus, I don't want to be age-ist, but Harrison Ford is getting a bit old to be a swash-buckling, dodging-giant-rocks-in-caves kinda actor, I think. He and Sean Connery could practically be contemporaries now, instead of father/son.

You do make some interesting points though. I'm just tired of the crap coming out of Hollywood, and re-hashed crap is even worse.

I think the answer is to produce movies that people actually want to see. Interestingly, 4Q is usually the season that traditionally has the highest movie attendance and 1Q the lowest (yes, I have access to Nielsen movie attendance data going back three years, and there is seasonality to it). Borat was very clever, but there's nothing I want to see in the theaters now, or in the near future.

Happy New Year!

I completely agree with you about rehashed crap. :) Most of our movie watching is done via Netflix.
