Cool Food

Found a couple of neat new items at the grocery store. First, a fruit called the kiwi berry. On the inside, it looks like a kiwi, but on the outside it is soft and smushy like a grape. It's also considerably smaller than a kiwi, more like a grape in size.

So just for you, Kate, five little kiwis! :)

Secondly, we found LEGO brand fruit snacks!!

Makes you want to play with your food. :)

Do they taste like kiwi? Can you pop the whole fruit in you mouth? Or is the outer shell furry?

Charity asked the same thing I would like to know! I've never heard of these berries. My daughter loves kiwi.

My daughter says they do. And yes, you can pop the whole thing in your mouth. The outside is smooth, just like a grape. Marie, I found them at Heinen's for the first time this week. They are advertising them as new.

They *are* pricey, Kate, probably even more expensive here. But sometimes I am willing to pay a little extra for the healthy stuff, if you know what I mean. Especially with the kids.

For those of you who care, your kiwi berries are relatives of the actual kiwi fruit. All are native to Asia (Sorry kate5), although kiwi fruit caught on by being commercially grown in New Zealand (props to you and yours, kate5). Kiwi berries are native to Siberia, and you can grow them in Cleveland if you want to. They grow on a vine, but you need a male and a female plant to get any fruit. The male vine is really cool, because its leaves grow out to be pink and white, as well as green, so a lot of people grow it as an ornimental (see kolomikta vine). See all the useless facts you can learn on the internet.

Oh yeah, these things are an intense source of vitamin C. One of them is equivalent to a dozen oranges (or something...I'll check my garden books)

Wow! Thanks for all the info, Kerner! I'd like to start a garden with the girls this year; maybe we could try some kiwi berries!
