Get Me Out of Here

I can't escape it any longer. A Charlie Brown Christmas is on television tonight. From where I sit in our family room, I can see our neighbors have their Christmas tree up. My daughters tell me that our neighbors across the street have three trees up. Yes, it would definitely seem another holiday season is upon us, and I am feeling very Charlie-Brownish.

When do you start decorating for Christmas? We usually wait until Christmas Eve or right before, as the Scientist's birthday is right before Christmas, and we like to keep her birthday and Christmas separate. Besides, there's that whole Advent thing. But I'm blue, and I don't think it comes just from being sick for over a week. I want to start decorating now, and I want to decorate to the hilt. I want to replace emptiness with stuff. Yeah, yeah, I know. But I'm just out of ideas. What I'd really like to do is take a break and go someplace unique.

Someplace out of the ordinary.

See new things.

Everything just seems so dreary and pointless.

Those are some great photos you have!

My parents always kept my birthday and Christmas separate too, and didn't decorate till after my birthday. I did not appreciate that until I was a teen.

We don't decorate for *Christmas* at my house until about the week of so before Christmas because we usually have a live tree and we want it to hold its needles until Epiphany.

But I have several advent decorations and those make the house festive.

Maybe you can get some ornament kits and make some beautiful things for the Christmas season.

Yeah, there is that Advent thing, but decorating your home is surely an adiaphoron, an indifferent thing, so if it would make you feel better, I say go for it!

destination: NEW ZEALAND!!!!!
but you'll have to bring some sunshine with you. i'm feeling decidedly psycho-bah-humbug about christmas, if there is such a descriptor.
lots of lists. less motivation.
perhaps i'll go light a scented candle.
alright then, perhaps i'll tell the kiddos that as soon as their rooms are tidy, we can put up the tree..
i was looking for some bribery rewards today lol :o)

you and i can race each other.. game on.

Sending big cyber-hugs your way! ((((Barb))))
I agree with Scott, go ahead and decorate if you think it'll make you feel better. I'm sure the dc would love it anyway!
Love the pics, BTW!

when dh and i lived out of state and were away from our family for thanksgiving, we used to decorate that weekend. Now that we have kids and pets we normally wait till after Jacob's birthday to put up the tree. I keep pushing for the 3' table top tree this year! I don't know where we are going to put a tree!
There is nothing wrong with decorating now! I'd say do it! :o)

or going to NZ sounds grand! :o) I think I'd rather do that!
The indoor water park looks fun too!

Barb,

I've been feeling pretty blue lately myself. I haven't done the first thing to decorate yet. Usually I put the tree up around the beginning of December. My mother always wants to take the tree down very soon after Christmas (like the next day) and I have to argue with her to keep it up a few more days.

I'm getting tired of putting up the same old now-ratty artificial tree and stringing the lights around it that don't work right half the time. I want to get one of those new trees with the built-in lights. Different colored lights, of course. ;-)

I think we'll start a new tradition, I use to decorate for Christmas when DH would bring up the decorations, but this year I think we'll decorate on Christmas eve. What do you think? My mom doesn't like the idea but hey it my life.

Kate, I would *love* to come to New Zealand. I'd bring some sunshine, if we had any here. :) Maybe I could grab some in Hawaii on the way.

Deb, the water park was *very* fun. That was one of the best Christmases I've ever had. Gino was consulting in Chicago then, and although consulting brings in the big $, it's hard to have him gone like that.

Susan, tell your mom you have to leave the tree up until Epiphany. 12 Days of Christmas! I like different colored lights too.

KrazyinB, I think you should put up your tree whenever you and DH decide is best. Definitely not your mom's decision.

Thanks to all of you for your encouragement!
