Completed Project

Although not my project! My husband and I decided that our eldest daughter needed a desk. We priced student desks, and they were all pretty high, and overpriced at that, we thought. So my husband pulled out some lumber and used his woodworking skills to make her one. I'm rather proud of him! My daughter picked out the stencil designs and colors.

Wow!!! That is beautiful :-) Great job, Dad! How does she like using it?

What are the measurements of the desk top?

Please tell her I like the color and stencil design she chose.

Just under 24" square. It started as 24" but got reduced a little during construction and finishing.

Its about 29" high.

The whole thing is made from 1/2" MDF. Glued with nailgun brads to hold it together while drying.

Latex interior paint. Deft poly sprayed over.

I am kinda proud of how it turned out. My last-minute idea to use a paint-roller for the writing surface worked very well. The surface has a light texture but is still satiny smooth.

Oops. One last thing. The square "stencils" were actually a stamp we made using foam-rubber stickers we got at Michael's (http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum=kd0711).

I stuck it to the end of a small block of wood and used a couple of scraps clamped to the desk top to align it. A very light layer of paint applied to the stamp with the dry-brush I used for the stencils. I'm very happy with how well that worked.

These stickers are available in a huge variety of shapes. I expect to use this technique again.

Thanks for the nice comments.
