Sorrow and Loss

Today we had to say goodbye to a dear friend, our beloved cat Champ. The initial problem was a sore in the mouth caused by decaying teeth. Today it was discovered that there was a cancerous tumor in the jaw that is almost impossible to treat longterm and might have taken most of his jaw to get out. On top of this, we also discovered he had diabetes, which further worsened his health prognosis. We decided the best thing to do was to end his life peacefully. Still, it broke our hearts to let him go.

He had been a member of our family longer than the Dancer. We brought his mother home when she was pregnant with him. We had him with us from before he was born until the day of his death. We were with him when he died. He was eleven years old. Now he can be with his brother and sisters, who died at birth.

I'm sorry. :(

(He sure was a LOT of cat, wasn't he? I'm allowed to notice because our own cat was pushing 17 lbs before we put her on starvation rations. Maybe it's just Champ's long hair.)

The problem with having my face in my avatar is it makes it look like I'm smiling at the death of your cat!

ARGH!

Thanks, EC. Champ was only just over 13 pounds at his max but he was very fluffy. And I'm not offended by your smiling face in the avatar. :)

Oh, Barb, I know this stinks. We love the kitties. You did the right thing, though.

I have one orange guy giving me the "tuna stare" right now.

It's really hard when a loved pet is so ill. I have so much respect for people who care for their pets and do what is needed, even though their heart is breaking.

Thanks, LL and Karen. Things are marginally better today.

Barb,

I'm so sorry about Champ. I went through this with my dog Coco four years ago, so I know that it is painful and devastating.

Losing a beloved pet is *so* difficult. I'm sorry to hear about your sad week. I know you'll all be missing Champ hugely and hope the happy memories you have will be a comfort.

Best wishes,
Laura

Thank you, Susan and Laura. We still miss him, but it's getting a little easier.
