This is one of the scary things about leaving your child in the care of others. And yes, I know that parents have been known to forget their kids also, accidentally leaving them in locked cars and such. But doesn't that usually happen as the parent is rushing off to work, full of thoughts of the job? I know not every mom can stay at home, but the stay-at-home mom can often live a much more relaxed lifestyle, where the kids *are* the job.

um, the thing that i don't get, is:
why the parents/police didn't just break down the door and rescue the baby at 7pm after the unanswered phone calls...?

No kidding, Kate. DUH.
My mom just told me the other day that AGAIN, a very small child was left in the back of a day-care van and was killed from the heat build up. That's twice that has happened in Milwaukee in the last 5 years or so.
There's something else that doesn't make sense - if the daycare closes at 6:30, why did the mother come to pick up her kid after that?
According to an earlier version of the story, the mom's sister was supposed to be picking the child up. When the mom finally inquired of her sister the child's whereabouts it was discovered that the sister had not picked the child up. So the mom trusted two layers of people who both dropped the ball on her child.
